There’s always a handful of women who show up at the Emmy’s and are dressed like it’s their high school prom. I don’t know what it’s about; perhaps some chance to rewrite bad memories, or an opportunity to “seize the moment” and look like a princess. I think it’s silly. I also don’t love “Best & Worst” lists. Let’s focus on the positive! How about a recap of my favorite dresses at the 2012 Emmy Awards, and my two favorite trends?
There were lots of trends this year: black and white, a range of rich yellows, ice blue, red, orange, and the ever-present, always irritating mermaid/fishtail gown (stop!). But my two favorites were the emphasis on yellow and the elegant white dresses we saw with pops of blue embellishment. Really different, really fashionable, really modern, really simple, really now, really amazing.
Leslie Mann must know that I’m a sucker for two things: pockets, and designer Naeem Khan. Her marigold and embellished lace halter-top gown was simply stunning. Claire Danes radiated Southern California cool in an easy fit Lanvin Spring 2013 Resort Collection confection that made her look elegant and pregnant (not always easy). Finally, Julianne Moore made lemony chartreuse and minimalism look easy in her delicious Dior dress (from Raf Simons’ first collection for the House of Dior). Great job, girls!
My two other favorites sporting a different trend (blue details breaking up classic white) were Nicole Kidman and Emilia Clarke. Emilia showed off a gorgeous white Chanel two-layed dress with cobalt/violet embellishment and detailing down the front, ending below panels of luscious snowy white. Kidman, known for her high fashion minimalism and form-fitting column gowns, stayed true to form with an amazing creation from one of her go-to fashion designers, Antonio Berardi. The white gown was highlighted with an angelic spray of blue sequined, beaded detailing across the front, adding interest to an otherwise all-white gown. LOVE.
